Anyone thinking of getting new hipster glasses should head to 9th and U streets NW this weekend, where uber-popular eyewear retailer Warby Parker is now open.
The store is the brand’s second opening in Washington in as many months: a Georgetown location opened at the end of September.
Warby Parker Shaw sticks close to the brand’s signature library inspiration for its stores, with open shelves for the eyeglasses made of solid walnut and checkered terrazzo tile flooring. (The design must be the secret for attracting the young creative class — the effect of Warby’s store is not unlike that of watch and leather goods retailer Shinola, which opened nearby on 14th Street NW last month.)
Opticians are available for questions behind the “reference desk,” and card catalog-style drawers store items behind it. Leather banquets and a chaise lounge encourage people to sit and hang out, and a handful of books from independent publishers available for sale are also there for skimming.
At 1,675 square feet, the Shaw location of Warby Parker is larger than Georgetown, and includes a full-service eye exam room and on-staff eye doctor. The store also has a custom photo booth with background artwork by Alia Penner — including, because it’s D.C., the Lincoln Memorial surrounded by cherry blossoms, natch — as well as illustrations by Maira Kalman decorating the walls.
Warby, which began as an online-only business and also distributes one pair of glasses to someone in need for each pair purchased, has been on a growth spurt. Shaw is Warby’s 18th location, and D.C. is one of only a couple of markets where the brand has more than one store. The company’s headquarters in New York and Los Angeles are the only other markets with multiples.
Stores have been opening slowly at The Shay, one of two high-profile developments in north Shaw from JBG Cos. Right now, Warby Parker and lululemon spinoff Kit and Ace are dominating two of the most prominent corners, but they will be joined later this year or early next year by a host of other trendy brands: menswear retailers Read Wall and Frank & Oak, urban bicycling and skating outfitter Chrome Industries, fashion brand Steven Alan, Australian skincare line Aesop and local retailer Lettie Gooch, among others.

ADI revamped Gables Residential in Dupont Circle’s exterior courtyard. This included the installation of a new cedar trellis atop a Pennsylvania bluestone patio. The patio features a stone cook area, including a granite countertop and a stainless steel grill. This space also boasts a new custom bocce court with a unique crushed oyster shell playing surface, a new fountain in the entrance to the space, and LED string lighting throughout to create a calming, secluded atmosphere.

This project consisted of a complete renovation to Top Golf’s Signature Room that is used to host corporate events within the facility. This project was completed under a tight schedule while Top Golf remained open and occupied. This space features a 9 foot wide walnut laminate running the length of the room and along the wall – floor to ceiling. The remaining walls feature multi-color stainless reveals to add color and contrast to the space.

This renovation of the lower elevator lobby and fitness center entrance was completed while the space remained open and occupied. ADI installed stone paneling in the lobby, upgraded the corridors, kitchen and two conference rooms, while also installing Lumicore panels at the fitness center entrance.

ADI Construction completed the renovation and re-design of the James Building main lobby, reception area and elevator lobby, while also improving the handicap ramp for RiverHouse Apartments. This space was designed to keep a consistent theme with the rest of the buildings within the complex, while also implementing new high-end finishes and modern updates, compared to the previous two renovations. Coordination between the architect, designer and ADI was a crucial element during this fast paced schedule – which included maintaining accessibility for the 600+ residents that occupy the building.

Working with restricted work hours and a tight schedule, ADI Construction renovated the main reception lobby of this four-star hotel for Marriott in Washington, DC. This transformation from traditional style to modern day design elements included two intricate chandeliers, leather bar panels, Lanko wooden mirror wall, and additional mirrored walls in the bar area. This phased renovation was completed while the hotel remained fully booked and operational.

ADI completed the demolition of the existing mail room and storage spaces to create a brand new 30,000 sf training facility and conference room for the Small Business Administration in the basement of the building. The conference room can be divided into three smaller rooms, if needed, by hidden partitions or used as one large facility. This project required 40 tons of steel to mount the floating, sound proofed ceiling. Another phase of the project included a break room on the 7th and 8th floors.
